It’s been another three months since my last writing. I don’t know why. It’s not that hard to do. I write lots of Emails and JIRAs (a commercial bug/issue tracker) every day for work. I write occasionally on Twitter (X) and Mastodon. And yet here in Emacs, my most comfy environment that I use daily, I don’t. It makes so little sense to me.

Visit

As he tends to do every year once his gardens and lawn are set for the year, my Dad drove out from Michigan to see me, the kids, and his great grandson. I suspect, God willing, next Spring 2024 he may visit again to see his third great grandson.

Latin

We did a lot of the usual things: visiting his favorite restaurants, consignment shops, a drive to Weston, Vermont, etc. This past Sunday the two of us went to Nashua to attend the nearest High Mass in Latin. I’d always wanted to go to one and it confirmed what I’d heard. Despite what you might think, it is filled with young and middle aged Catholics – all dressed very respectfully and participating with great reverence.

Afterwards we drove down to the Nashua IHOP, which I’d never been to before. I can’t remember the last time I’d been to an IHOP, probably decades! If it weren’t so far from Milford, I might go more.

Bed

Around 1998 when my late wife was in the last half of her pregnancy with our second child, we upgraded the queen sized bed we had to a king sized bed. When she passed almost ten years ago, I’d often felt that a king sized bed is such overkill for one person. Some might consider it opulant or decadent. When you have slept in one with someone else for so long, being in a king sized bed by yourself just feels empty. In talking with some of my usual breakfast companions, there were recommendations about getting an adjustable bed. I’d also read that they can help with snoring and sleep apnea and other health related issues. (backaches, acid reflux, …)

I ordered one about two weeks ago. It arrived and we set it up last Saturday. What a pain to get my bed out of the room and a somewhat lesser pain to get this one in its place. I’m so thankful for the help I had.

It’s funny how nothing these days goes without adding “bells and whistles”. Of course this bed has a wireless remote to dynamically adjust the various heights using whisper quiet motors. It also has:

  • LED lights below it that can be enabled in case you get up in the middle of the night.

  • Upper and lower massage.

  • USB ports on each side of the frame, suitable for charging portable devices.

  • Battery backup in case of a brief power outage.

It’s just crazy! Downsizing did open up a fair amount of room in my master bedroom. If I can ever offload my piano in the downstairs study, it’ll let me move my work-from-home desk down there and open up more space.
